Definition: Automation is the use of control systems (such as numerical control, programmable logic control, and other industrial control systems), in concert with other information technologies such as computer-aided technologies (CAD, CAM, CAx), to control industrial machinery and processes, thus reducing the need for human intervention. Within the context of industrialization, automation is a step beyond mechanization. Whereas mechanization provided human operators with machinery to assist them with the muscular requirements of work, automation greatly reduces the need for human sensory and mental requirements as well. Processes and systems can also be automated.

Our definition: Automation involves replacing several activities previously performed by people with automated elements, thus minimizing human intervention.

Industry automation

A programmable logic controller (PLC) or programmable controller is a digital computer used for the automation of electromechanical processes, such as the control of machinery on factory assembly lines, amusement rides, or lighting fixtures. PLCs are used in many industries and machines. Unlike general-purpose computers, a PLC is designed for multiple input and output arrangements, extended temperature ranges, immunity to electrical noise, and resistance to vibration and impact. Programs used to control the operation of machinery are typically stored in battery-backed or non-volatile memory. A PLC is an example of a real time system, since output results must be produced in response to input conditions within a set time; otherwise, the result will be unintended operations.

Process diagrams
